In between

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our responses lies our growth and our freedom.”
– Victor E. Frankl

This VR project takes the user to the space of his response. The user interacts with spirits, which are trapped in the in-between. To hear what they have to say the user must be on eye-level with them, which requires sitting or lay down on the floor in order to empathize with them.

The particle spirits are 3D-scanned humans, who identify themselves as being stuck in two or more cultures. Bi-cultural people, who identify with two cultures simultaneously, are particularly vulnerable to this kind of rejection. A person can become bi-cultural by moving from one country to another, or if they are born and raised in one country by parents who came from elsewhere. Despite having benefits, such as language advantages and more flexible and open thinking, bi-cultural people are vulnerable to rejection of their cultures. They experience collisions of their worlds and are confronted with expectations from both cultures. Sometimes they face criticism for stepping outside the bounds of what’s normally acceptable in their heritage culture. Due to these rejections of both sides, they sometimes never feel complete and feel the pressure of deciding to identify with only one culture.  Our response to this struggle of bi-cultural people reflects their vulnerability to rejection.
